Now this is actually a more plausible concept than others I have covered so far. In fact I believe this will be achieved within the next few decades. So how does it work? Well, disease comes in roughly four forms, cancers, genetic diseases, bacteria and viruses. A combination of our immune system, antibiotics and new experimental phage treatment can completly cure bacterial infections, so thats one down, three to go.
Viruses are one of mans oldest foes. Today we have vacinces to cure viruses but apart from that, our immune system has to do the rest. Thats right, have no cure to the common cold. Our immune system has to do it all! However, recent advances in CRISPR/cas9 (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palendromic Repeats) genetic engineering technolegy have made it possible to eliminate all viral infections! How does this work you may ask. Well, when a virus begins to take over a cell it injects it’s genetic material into the cell. Now, by the time the virus does this the cell is likely to die, its defences are to weak. However any cell which does survive will cleave off some of the viruses DNA and store in a DNA archieve known as CRISPR. Now when the virus invades in the future the cas9 protein can use the DNA stored in the CRISPR archieve to defeat the virus! Today we can collect the DNA of viruses and artificialy put them into the cells CRISPR virus, meaning that today we can wipe out any virus!
Genetic diseases are caused by abnormalities in the human genome. Using sequencing technoledgies we now know the abnormalities that cause most common genetic diseases. Using the genetic engineering techniques such as cas9, individual letters of the human geonome can be changed, solving the problem of genetic disease.
Cancer is one of the biggest killers of all time. Today one of every six people alive on earth today will die of cancer, it is an epidemic. Despite this, in recent years massive advancements have been made in cancer fighting technoledgies. It may not seem like it but soon (within a decade or two) chemotherapy and radiotherapy will be made obsolete. There are several experimental ways to destroy different forms of cancer. Immunotherapies which are already widespread. Immunotherapies use excess immune cells to do their job, fight cancers. There are chemical treatments which cause cancers to kill themselves (apoptosis). There are also potential tumour suppresents and modified immune cells which seak out a destroy cancer, soon making cancer a thing of the past.
